sludge wastewater treatment

Sludge is such a funny word, isn’t it? It’s slimy, gooey —  and it can be pretty darn gross. But did you know that sludge is actually crucial for cleaning our dirty water? Today, we’re going to share with you what we can do with sludge in the process of wastewater treatment and how it can help us to keep our environment free from dirty, harmful waste.

Because, well, when we flush our toilets or wash our dishes, all that dirty water has to go somewhere. It goes to something with a name like a wastewater treatment plant. At the treatment plant, the water undergoes several steps to get rid of all that yucky stuff in it, such as dirt, bacteria and other waste. One of them consists of deploying special bacteria that assist in breaking down the waste in the water. That’s where sludge comes in.

The Role of Sludge in Wastewater Treatment Processes

Sludge is a thick, dark substance that remains after the dirty water has been cleaned. This sludge contains beneficial bacteria — bugs which consume all the waste in the water. These bacteria participate in the work that makes the water clean enough — and replete enough with beneficial minerals and metals — that it can be put back into rivers and oceans. Without sludge, our water would remain dirty, clogged with germs and pollution, which would be terrible for the environment and for our health, of course.
